Art I Syllabus

Course Goals and Objectives

Throughout the year students will:

  • Create art using the elements of art: line, shape, color, texture, form, space, and value as tools to achieve the principles of design: emphasis, repetition/pattern, movement/rhythm, contrast/variety, balance, proportion, and unity.
  • Create art through problem solving by using direct observation, original sources, experiences, and imagination to communicate design solutions.  Students will understand copyright and public domain to use appropriate images for focal point of artwork when working from images rather than direct observation or imagination.  Students will express themselves, collaborate with each other, and will learn techniques in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, fiber art, design, and digital art.
  • Create using historical and cultural relevance in art.  Students will learn to compare and contrast historical and contemporary styles, and to describe cultural characteristics in art.  Students will have opportunities to collaborate on community based projects and learn about career opportunities through art.
  • Critically evaluate, analyze, and respond to the artworks by self, peers, and artists’ work in museums, galleries, and websites.  Students will construct physical AND electronic portfolio of personal artwork accompanied by written critique, analyzation, and interpretation to provide evidence of learning.
